Bride’s Guide to Do’s and Don’ts of the Spa

via SpaFinder.com

Weddings take some serious planning. It’s recommended that you invest in a series of spa visits, starting 4-6 months before your wedding. Read the do’s and don’ts for getting the perfect bridal spa experience.

SPA DO’S

  1. Plan Ahead:
Make a list of your wellness & beauty priorities: if you have trouble skin, focus your time & resources on a series of facials. If you’re super stressed, regular massages will ease tension and give you soft skin. If your hair needs attention, choose a spa that can help you get luscious locks.

  2. Get a Body Wrap:
There are body wraps designed for many purposes: detoxify your skin, lose a few inches, soothe aches & pains, get super-soft skin and more. Spafinder recommends booking a series of 4-6 body wraps for best results.

  3. Take Your Fiancé:
Book a couples massage with your other half, or for a unique experience we highly recommend booking a Hammam experience together. Skin is exfoliated & cleansed with black soap and Rhassoul clay is applied to purify the skin. End the day with a relaxing visit to the sauna with your loved one. Your skin will be positively glowing – and so will your future hubby!

  4. Start Body Brushing:
Body brushing is a guaranteed route to glowing skin. You can do this at home every day with a body brush and compliment your regime with a lymphatic drainage massage at the spa. Body brushing improves circulation, softens skin, reduces cellulite and helps the body eliminate toxins.

SPA DON’TS

  1. Get a Facial a Few Days Before Your Wedding:
Facials draw out impurities from the skin, which can cause breakouts and redness. For this reason, it is recommended that you have a facial no less than one week prior to your wedding. For radiant skin, Spafinder Wellness 365 recommends a series of facials before your wedding (try once a month for 6 months).

  2. Wax on the Day of the Wedding:
Similar to facials, waxing should be performed at least a week before your wedding. You want your wedding day skin to be glowing and smooth, not irritated and red!

  3. Do a DIY Fake Tan!:
We’re sure you’ve heard horror stories about brides doing their own fake tan before their wedding. Don’t go there – it’s not worth it! If you want a fake tan, pay a professional, preferably one you’ve used before or someone recommended by a friend.

  4. Stress About Money
We understand that it’s not possible for everyone to visit the spa each month in the run-up to your wedding. No matter what your budget, we want you to be able to enjoy the spa – you can even do this at home with our DIY spa tips. Give yourself a facial, enjoy a detoxifying bath and even make your own lip balm wedding favors!

by Sarah Ramirez
Esthetician at Ra

Summer is here and that means it’s time to stock up on sunblock to keep skin protected on these beautiful, sunny days. I am always preaching to my clients, as well my family, the benefits and importance of using sunblock. A key thing to remember is to make sure your sunscreen does not contain alcohol, fragrance, oxybenzone, retinol or vitamin A. Sunscreen should be applied daily, 30 minutes prior before leaving your house.

Aveda Daily Light Guard

Top five reasons everyone should wear sunscreen:
  1. The ozone layer is depleting and your body needs shielding from harmful rays.
  2. Skin cancer rates are on the rise, and sunscreen has been proven to decrease the development of skin cancer.
  3. Sunscreen helps prevent pigmentation from getting any darker and reduces your chances for the future.
  4. Sunscreen also helps reduce the appearance of facial red veins and blotchiness.
  5. Sunscreen slows down the development premature aging skin.

We recommend Aveda’s Daily Light Guard. It’s a lightweight, broad spectrum sunscreen that absorbs quickly and can be worn under makeup. Stop by Ra to pick up Daily Light Guard and start protecting your skin today.

7 Tips to Know Before Waxing

by Sarah Ramirez
Esthetician at Ra

With the summer season upon us, your legs are bound to get more exposure in a day than they have all winter. But with shaving comes razor burn, and the hassle of daily, maybe weekly, shaving. Instead of becoming a slave to the razor, consider waxing. Waxing removes the follicle from the hair shaft, giving you a no-bump look to enjoy for weeks.

Here are 7 tips to remember before waxing:

  1. Make sure your body hair is at least ¼ to ¾ of inch long.
  2. Take some ibuprofen or Tylenol 30 min. prior before service to help prevent inflammation.
  3. For women, avoid waxing during your time of the month when skin is more sensitive.
  4. Give yourself at least two weeks if you’ve recently used Retin-A, Renova, Differin or Accutane.
  5. Limit UV exposure to 24 hours before and after waxing.
  6. Exfoliate before your visit to loosen up those hairs, and help make their exit easier.

After waxing, apply cold Aloe Vera gel if your skin is still sensitive after your visit. No hot showers, sauna, or gym for 24 hours to give your skin time to settle.

Ra uses two products for waxing services: Nufree and Cirepil. Nufree is a wax-free botanical hair removal system that is gentle and effective from head to toe and everything in-between. Nufree doesn’t actually contain any wax, honey, or sugar and is antibacterial and antimicrobial, which makes it perfect for sensitive skin. Cirepil is also good for sensitive areas, like underarms, the bikini zone, and Brazilian waxing. This wax heats at a low temperature and contains jojoba oil for client comfort.

When you’re ready to prep your body for the beach, make an appointment at Ra with one of our professional estheticians to make your waxing experience a little less painful.

Protect Your Skin from Sun Damage and UV Rays

by Silviya Redinger
Licensed Master esthetician and Esthetic
Educator from WA state

Aveda SunscreenWith the summer comes the beach, backyard BBQs, and pool time which means increased risk to exposure. The hours spent working on a sun-kissed glow can result in skin aging and some commonly side effects such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.

Extra precautions are a must to protect your skin: wear protective clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. Some sunscreens can be harmful to the skin and complexion. It is recommended to avoid sunscreens that include fragrance as it can be photosensitizer, PABAs which are skin irritants, and Isopropyl Myristate which can be comedogenic. Mineral based sunscreens and sunscreens rich in anti-oxidants provide great benefits and protection from the UV rays.

For sunscreen to be effective it needs to be reapplied throughout the day. For example, it is recommended that SPF 30 sunscreen to be reapplied every hour and before and after taking a dip in the water. What does SPF mean? The SPF is the length of time a product protects the skin. So, if a person normally starts to turn pink in 10 minutes of sun exposure, with SPF 15 it will take 15 times as long, 2.5 hours

Using sun protection is essential to skin cancer prevention. Daily application of sunscreen is one simple step we can take towards being sun-safe.

Silviya Redinger is Licensed Master Esthetician at Ra, and Esthetic Educator from WA state. Book an appointment with Silviya for optimal skin recovery and protection.
